Slabs and Foundations
Shed and house slabs are essential for the foundation of your structure. At Pro Concreter Darwin, we have expertise in making strong concrete slabs for your house and shed.
Concrete slabs are the most durable materials that you can use to construct a solid foundation for your house or shed. At Pro Concreter Darwin, we have dedicated and experienced contractors who are committed to delivering your projects on time and within your budget.
It is crucial to note that concrete slabs can either be post-tension or steel-reinforced concrete slabs. The post-tension slabs have cables tensioned at the edges of the slabs to make them remain in compression. Our contractors can use any of these depending on your choice.
On the other hand, in the steel-reinforced slabs, steel rods are used to hold the concrete together. At Pro Concreter Darwin, we can make any concrete slab for your shed or house.
We are conversant with the technicalities surrounding the construction of sheds and house slabs. Before we construct your house slab, we examine the nature of the soil to determine whether your area is susceptible to frost.
Our contractors have vast experience in house and shed construction. Before we build your shed or house slab, we assess the following: whether surface water will be flowing towards your shed/house, whether the level of the proposed floor is above the surrounding ground, and whether the area is flooded when it rains.
Can I lay my own concrete slab?
For DIY concrete work use a ready-mix crack-resistant cement mix. Create a wood frame around the area you want to place concrete.
- Pour a layer of concrete mix and then add a steel reinforcement balls layer on top.
- Spray paint around the outside of the cement
- Install the rebar securely in place
- Tap the sides of the box using a hammer
- Cover the slab with a plastic sheet
- Remove the wooden frame.
What’s the cost of laying a 20×20 slab?
On average, a 20×20 slab costs $2,468. The cost per square foot is between $4 and $8 on average. However, most homeowners spend on average between $5.35 to $6.17 per square foot for both materials and installation.
The final cost depends on slabs thickness, size and any special reinforcement, e.g., wire mesh or rebar.
What are concrete slabs used for?
A concrete slab is a major structural feature of modern buildings. Slabs have a thickness of between 100mm and 500mm and are used to build horizontal surfaces like ceilings, floors and roof decks.
Is gravel required underneath concrete?
Whether you pour cement for a footpath or patio, a strong shingle base is required to prevent the cement from cracking and shifting – this is especially important in clay soil because it doesn’t drain well, which results in water residing underneath the cement and slowly eroding the soil.
How Much Does it Cost to Lay A 20×30′ slab?
This is 600 square feet, or a little under 56 square metres (slabs normally measured in feet)
Going off the amount of $75 to $110 per m2, that would be between $4200 and $6050.
What is the Cost of A Concrete Slab?
On average, concrete slabs can cost anywhere from $75 to $110/m2. Factors influencing this are
- Size of job/ area
- Thickness of slab
- Any finishes/ decorations on top
- Accessibility
If your slab is going on a flat plot of land with no access issues, expect the price to be on the lower end of the scale. If it looks like the concreter will have to use a concrete pump to lay the cement, it will probably be on the higher side.
Can I pour concrete over existing concrete?
Adding a layer of concrete over existing concrete doesn’t join the two because the cement in the concrete doesn’t have a natural bonding agent. That means the concrete sits as a separate layer on top of the existing one. Thus, it doesn’t produce a robust and serviceable floor.
Additionally, when you bond a block of new concrete to an old one, cracks in the old slab transfer up to the new slab within a day or two.
How Thick Should a Concrete Slab Be?
This is dependant on the overall reason. for the slab, but the minimum should be 5cm. If the slab is thicker, this means it will be stronger and more durable, so for residential constructions, we normally go off the minimum of 10cm for a concrete shed or house slab.
A house concrete foundation might be thicker than a slab for a shed or a garage. It will require more cement and more labour, so will cost will be higher.
Is concrete better than Asphalt for a driveway?
Concrete driveways last longer than the asphalt driveways. However, concrete is quite expensive to install. Besides, concrete can easily crack during winter or suffer damage in case you use the wrong de-icing products.
On the other hand, Asphalt is flexible; thus, less likely to crack. However, it requires more maintenance than concrete. But it is easier to repair. A well-installed and maintained Asphalt driveway can last up to 25 years.
How thick should concrete be for a driveway?
4 inches. For a non-reinforced pavement, a thickness of four inches is standard for passenger car driveways. However, for 5 or 6 inches thickness, reinforcement is necessary, and such breadth works well for heavier vehicles.
How Much Does a Concrete Driveway Cost?
Residents in NT can expect to pay around $2,000 for a standard 30 m2 concrete driveway or approx $65/ m2 which includes both labour and materials.
The overall dollar amount will depend on the overall size of the quote, preferred finish and decorations to the cement driveway your are laying.
If your driveway is on a sloped, this can easily add another $10per m2 to the job.
Also, if you have additional work like excavation or removal needing done, this can bring the price up to over $100/ m2 for the additional labour costs and material.
For a 21 m2 driveway on level surface using standard practices with no decoration, the cost would be approx $1,500 plus GST.
